Mrs. Weolke ERWC period 5 22 April 2015 The Crucible In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller the story is about a town called Salem and in the town one of the main characters Abigail lacks an immense amount of integrity and manipulates the civilians in Salem into believing her lies. Salem is a highly religious town and everyone in the town “knows” each other. Salem is governed and revolves around the church, if you disobey the church or commit a crime you can be punished by death without trial. Abigail is in love with a man name John Proctor, She was the servant for the Proctor family. Abigail confessed her love and John proctor had an affair, John cheated on his wife who eventually found out about their relationship. Abigail was fired as their family servant, and was mad that she could not have John to herself. In the Town of Salem John was thought highly of and many people respected him. Abigail and multiple girls from Salem went into the forest to practice a which craft ritual, The girls danced and shouted while throwing items into a pot boiling over a fire. Each girl made wishes hoping they would one day become true, Abigail wished for Mrs. Proctor to die so she could legally be with John. A man in the woods spotted the girls; they all ran to evade being suspected of witchcraft. Abigail is identified and later questioned about being in the woods, She lied and said she was being controlled by demons and the girls she was with willingly were practicing witchcraft. Abigail claimed that one of the demons she was being possessed by was Mrs. Proctor. Mrs. Proctor was immediately arrested and thought of as a satanic sinner. Nineteen girls were sentenced to death due to the fact Abigail could not tell the truth and lacked integrity. John Proctor gave up his good name and told the truth to the judge about how he had an affair with Abigail and she is doing this solely to be with him. The judge asked Mrs. Proctor if John had cheated and she did not want her husband to be killed so she said no, Mrs. Proctor was hung with the other nineteen girls. John proctor was punished by death for committing adultery and being an unfaithful husband. Salem never learned the truth about Abigail. In the book the crucible by Arthur Miller a story told about a unfaithful women betraying others for her own self good. People suffered because of the false accusations created by Abigail, much like the 1950s McCarthy hearings where innocent civilians were arrested and imprisoned because people falsely accused them of committing a crime. Ryan Malcosmon Mrs. Woelke ERWC period 5 23 April 2015 Reflection The assignment I chose to revise was from an in class essay I wrote the beginning of my junior year. I wrote the essay on a book called The Crucible, after reading it I realized how much stronger of a writer I have become. I redid the essay but left the core, I added proper punctuation and loaded language to help my writing stand out. I replaced words with better and proper vocabulary. My writing has improved immensely because I have taken expository reading and writing, I used techniques I learned in class and applied it to my revised essay. |
